Rishabh Pant made history by becoming the most expensive player ever in the Indian Premier League (IPL) as he was bought for a staggering ₹27 crore by Lucknow Super Giants, surpassing Shreyas Iyer, who was acquired by Punjab Kings for ₹26.75 crore. The third-highest bid of the day went to Kolkata Knight Riders, who secured Venkatesh Iyer for ₹23.75 crore. A total of 84 players were auctioned on Day 1 of the IPL 2025 mega auction in Saudi Arabia, with 72 players finding new teams and 12 remaining unsold. At the end of the day, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) had the highest remaining purse with ₹30.65 crore, followed by Mumbai Indians (₹26.10 crore) and Punjab Kings (₹22.50 crore).
Among the notable unsold players were David Warner and Jonny Bairstow. Among uncapped players, former Delhi Capitals pacer Rasikh Salam Dar was the priciest, fetching ₹6 crore from RCB, while Mumbai Indians secured Namar Dhir for ₹5.25 crore. On Day 2, 33 capped players will go under the hammer, followed by an accelerated auction involving both capped and uncapped players. All 10 franchises have been asked to nominate 25 players for this accelerated round.
