Bought for a staggering INR 23.75 crore in the IPL 2025 auction, Venkatesh Iyer has stayed humble despite his rise to prominence. Even though his IPL salary has soared from Rs 20 lakh to over Rs 20 crore in just a few years, Venkatesh remains committed to continuing his education. In fact, the Kolkata Knight Riders all-rounder recently revealed that he is pursuing a PhD, having already completed his MBA. At 29, he is thinking about his future beyond cricket, envisioning life after 60.
In an interview with the Indian Express, Venkatesh shared that when a new player joins the Madhya Pradesh state domestic team, the first question he asks is whether they are continuing their education.
“I come from an orthodox family, so it was tough to convince my middle-class parents that I would only pursue cricket. But it was the opposite for me—I was passionate about academics. My parents wanted me to succeed in the game as well. Whenever a new player joins the MP team, the first thing I ask him is, ‘padhai kar rahe ho ki nahi?’ (Are you studying or not?). Education stays with you for life. A cricketer cannot play until they’re 60. You have to understand that there is a shelf life to this career,” he said.
Venkatesh attributes much of his perspective to the values instilled in him by his parents, believing that being educated helps him make better decisions both on and off the field.
“To excel in life, education is crucial. It gives me a perfect switch-off from the game. I don’t want to be thinking about cricket all the time; it adds unnecessary pressure. If I can balance both, I will. Being educated also helps me make better decisions on the field. There will be situations where it’s not just about skill, but about making better decisions. I want cricketers to educate themselves not just in cricket, but in general knowledge as well. If you have the opportunity to complete your graduation or post-graduation, you should. “मैं एक पारंपरिक परिवार से आता हूं, इसलिए अपने मध्यवर्गीय माता-पिता को यह समझाना कि मैं केवल क्रिकेट ही करूंगा, यह काफी मुश्किल था। लेकिन मेरे लिए स्थिति अलग थी, मुझे अकादमिक में भी गहरी रुचि थी। मेरे माता-पिता चाहते थे कि मैं खेल में भी अच्छा करूं। जब भी कोई नया खिलाड़ी MP टीम में आता है, तो सबसे पहला सवाल मैं यही पूछता हूं, ‘पढ़ाई कर रहे हो कि नहीं?’ शिक्षा आपके साथ जीवन भर रहती है, एक क्रिकेटर 60 साल तक नहीं खेल सकता। आपको यह समझना होगा कि इस पेशे का भी एक समय सीमा होती है,” उन्होंने कहा।
वेनकटेश अपने माता-पिता द्वारा सिखाए गए मूल्यों को अपने जीवन में उतारते हुए मानते हैं कि शिक्षा से उन्हें मैदान पर भी बेहतर फैसले लेने में मदद मिलती है।
“अगर आपको जीवन में सच में सफलता हासिल करनी है, तो आपको शिक्षित होना चाहिए। शिक्षा मुझे खेल से एक अच्छा ब्रेक देती है। मैं नहीं चाहता कि मैं हमेशा क्रिकेट के बारे में सोचता रहूं, यह दबाव बनाता है। अगर मैं दोनों चीजें एक साथ कर सकता हूं, तो करूंगा। एक शिक्षित व्यक्ति होना मुझे मैदान पर बेहतर निर्णय लेने में भी मदद करता है। ऐसा समय आएगा जब यह सिर्फ कौशल के बारे में नहीं होगा, बल्कि इस बात पर होगा कि आप बेहतर निर्णय ले सकते हैं या नहीं। मैं चाहता हूं कि क्रिकेट खिलाड़ी न सिर्फ क्रिकेट ज्ञान, बल्कि सामान्य ज्ञान में भी शिक्षा प्राप्त करें। अगर आपके पास स्नातक या पोस्ट-ग्रेजुएशन पूरा करने का अवसर है, तो आपको जरूर करना चाहिए। मैं अब अपनी PhD (वित्त) कर रहा हूं। अगली बार आप मुझे डॉ. वेनकटेश अय्यर के तौर पर इंटरव्यू लेंगे!” उन्होंने कहा।
