‘Pushpa 2’ Box Office Success Amid Controversy
Pushpa 2: The Rule, directed by Sukumar, remains a box-office sensation despite facing significant controversies and legal challenges. The movie has amassed a staggering ₹1,109.85 crore net in India within 21 days, with ₹716.65 crore coming from its Hindi version alone. Telugu stands second with ₹316.3 crore, followed by Tamil at ₹55.35 crore, Kannada at ₹7.48 crore, and Malayalam at ₹14.07 crore.
On its third Wednesday (Day 21), the film earned ₹19.75 crore net across all languages, including ₹15 crore in Hindi and ₹4.1 crore in Telugu. The movie has shown remarkable resilience, rebounding from a decline on Day 19 and maintaining strong momentum.

With a runtime of 3 hours and 20 minutes, the film balances high-octane action with emotional depth. ETimes rated the film 3.5 out of 5 stars, praising its layered narrative and captivating performances.
Renowned filmmaker Sujoy Ghosh also lauded the film, calling it a “beautifully crafted magic show” with intricate detailing. Allu Arjun’s performance was particularly celebrated, with Ghosh noting that the actor “had him hypnotized.”
Legal and Social Challenges
Despite its success, Pushpa 2 has been embroiled in controversies. A tragic stampede at the film’s premiere led to the death of a woman and left her son severely injured. Actor Allu Arjun faced backlash and was briefly detained following the incident. Protesters even vandalized his Hyderabad residence.
In response, the actor and his father expressed their condolences, offering ₹2 crore in support to the victim’s family. The film’s producer also extended financial assistance to the grieving family. However, legal troubles persist, with a political leader filing a complaint against a specific scene allegedly disrespecting law enforcement.

Production
Development
Before the release of Pushpa: The Rise in 2021, the filmmakers announced the movie would release in two parts, with the first part arriving in 2021 and the sequel planned for 2022. Initially, 10% of the sequel’s footage was shot alongside the first part. However, director Sukumar decided to revise the sequel’s story to better meet audience expectations and address shortcomings from the first installment. By July 2022, the scripting was completed in Hyderabad.
The sequel’s official title, Pushpa 2: The Rule, was announced on 22 August 2022. On the same day, a formal muhurat puja ceremony took place in Hyderabad with the cast and crew in attendance. Sukumar collaborated with Srikanth Vissa for the dialogues, while retaining most of the crew from the previous film. This included cinematographer Miroslaw Kuba Brozek, editors Karthika Srinivas and Ruben, art directors S. Ramakrishna and Monica Nigotre, and sound designers Resul Pookutty and Vijay Kumar. Costume design was handled by Deepali Noor and Sheetal Sharma, with Preeti Sheel Singh as the character designer. Action choreography was led by Peter Hein, Kecha Kamphakdee, Dragon Prakash, and Nabakanta, while dance choreography included Prem Rakshith, Ganesh Acharya, Sekhar, Vijay Polaki, and Shrashti Verma.
Casting
Allu Arjun, Fahadh Faasil, Rashmika Mandanna, Dhananjaya, Rao Ramesh, Sunil, Anasuya Bharadwaj, and Ajay Ghosh reprised their roles from the first film. In April 2023, Jagapathi Babu joined the cast in a pivotal role. Jagadeesh Prathap Bandari rejoined in February 2024 after being granted bail in a suicide case.
Speculation around the item number involved names like Malaika Arora, Triptii Dimri, Janhvi Kapoor, Disha Patani, and Shraddha Kapoor. Ultimately, Sreeleela was finalized for the role. Saurabh Sachdeva, Tarak Ponnappa, Satya, and Adithya Menon also joined the cast later.
Filming
Principal photography began with a test shoot on 30 October 2022 in Hyderabad. An action sequence was filmed in Visakhapatnam in January 2023, followed by scenes in Bangalore in March 2023. Despite rumors of halted production due to creative dissatisfaction, filming resumed promptly.
In April 2023, forest sequences were shot in Odisha’s Malkangiri district. Action sequences in Visakhapatnam Port involved Allu Arjun performing a stunt while suspended 100 feet above the ground. Key scenes were later filmed in Ramoji Film City and Hyderabad.
The production team recreated sets depicting 1990s and 2000s Japan and Malaysia in Ramoji Film City after deciding against on-location shoots due to budget and time constraints. By August 2024, the film’s climax was completed, and an item number featuring Sreeleela was filmed in November 2024. The shooting, including the romantic song “Peelings,” was wrapped by late November 2024.
Post-Production
The film’s visual effects were handled by Makuta VFX, with R.C. Kamalakannan as the VFX supervisor. Resul Pookutty and Vijay Kumar worked as sound designers. Shreyas Talpade and Jis Joy returned to dub for Allu Arjun in the Hindi and Malayalam versions, respectively.
Editors Ruben and Karthika Srinivas left the project in May 2024 due to scheduling conflicts and creative differences, and Naveen Nooli stepped in to complete the editing. By October 2024, the first half of the film was edited, and Rashmika completed her dubbing by November 2024.
The final version of Pushpa 2: The Rule was submitted to the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) in late November 2024. The film received a U/A certificate with a runtime of 200 minutes after minor edits to violent scenes.
