Sunil Gavaskar Criticizes Mohammed Siraj for ‘Unnecessary’ Send-Off to Travis Head After 140-Run Knock
Batting legend Sunil Gavaskar expressed his disapproval of Mohammed Siraj’s animated gesture towards Travis Head after dismissing the Australian batsman on Day 2 of the second Test match in Adelaide. Head, who had scored an impressive 140 runs, was dismissed by Siraj with a brilliant yorker, but the Indian pacer appeared fired up and gestured for him to walk back to the pavilion. The exchange led to a brief confrontation between the two players, with Siraj later facing boos from the 50,000-strong Adelaide crowd.
Gavaskar criticized Siraj’s actions, stating that it was unnecessary to give a send-off to a player who had just scored 140 runs. “Unnecessary, if you ask me, the man’s got 140, he hasn’t got four or five or something. He got 140, you’re giving him a send-off, that’s totally uncalled for,” Gavaskar remarked during the tea-time show on Star Sports.
Head’s counter-attacking knock, featuring 17 fours and 4 sixes, was a key factor in Australia building a commanding 157-run first-innings lead, posting 337 in response to India’s 180. Siraj had an opportunity to dismiss Head earlier on 76 but dropped a tough catch off Ravichandran Ashwin’s delivery.
Gavaskar also noted the reaction from the home crowd, suggesting that Siraj could have been hailed as a hero if he had simply applauded Head’s outstanding innings. Instead, by giving him a send-off, Siraj ended up becoming the “villain.” “No wonder he’s getting the stick from the crowd. Travis Head is a local hero, and after scoring 100, if he had even just applauded, Siraj would have been a hero for the entire crowd. Instead by giving him a send-off, he’s become the villain,” Gavaskar added.
Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting also weighed in on the incident, speculating that Siraj may have been frustrated after Head hit him for a six just before the wicket. Ponting noted, “Siraj wasn’t happy to be clipped over deep backward square for six. It was almost like he [Siraj] lost it halfway down. He might have a bit to answer for there as well. That’s what you call the old-fashioned send-off. Umpires and referees don’t see kindly to stuff like that.”
